predicate nominatives and predicate adjectives are grouped

together and called subject complements. This is because the

complements refer to the subject of a sentence . . . duh.

Direct and Indirect Objects

Whereas predicate nominatives and predicate adjectives

are used only with linking verbs, direct objects and indirect

objects are used with action verbs.

A direct object is a word or words that receive the action

of a verb. They can be nouns, pronouns, phrases, or clauses,

and they usually answer the questions whom? or what? In the

following examples, direct objects are labeled DO.
